The spring-boot:run goal isn't failing. It is running the application, detecting that the application terminated with a non-zero exit status (in this case an exit status of 1), and reporting this as an error condition to Maven.
This is done so that an automated build would fail in this situation, since a non-zero exit code from an application indicates an application error, by convention.
